Basil -More Than Just a Pasta Flavoring Published on Wednesday, 02 June 2010 Basil is one of the most frequently used herbs in cooking today, especially in Mediterranean cuisines. Combined with tomatoes, basil can draw out a distinct aroma and unique flavor to any pasta dish. Though ancient people are not big fans of this herb, Americans and Romans have a special liking to basil that they learned how to plant them in their gardens. Basil is very easy to plant. It prefers sunlight just like any other plant but it can also grow indoors in a little pot. If you don't have the time or space to plant this fragrant herb, many food shops offer basil both in dried and fresh form. You can use it to flavor vegetables, fish, meats and soups. Basil as an Insect Repellant Aside from using basil as a flavoring to pastas and soups, it can also be very beneficial to your garden. While many cultures are enticed with pungent smell of basil plants, it is quite the opposite for flies and fruit pests. The strong odor of basil plants masks the sweet scent of your other tasty plants. Basil as a Medicinal Herb Basil, being a member of the mint family, can also be used for a number of medicinal purposes. It can be used to alleviate gas pains, stomach cramps, constipation and menstrual cramps. If you have difficulties in sleeping, you can drink basil tea to help you fall asleep. Some food shops also offer them in small capsules if you are not much of a tea drinker.
